Shock and sorrow have gripped residents of Cross River State following the sudden death of a young man during a rehearsal for the annual Passion of Christ play.
The incident happened in Ugep, where church members were preparing for the Easter presentation. The victim, identified as Michael Obeten, reportedly died after a locally made explosive used for stage effects malfunctioned during the rehearsal.
According to eyewitnesses, what seemed like part of the drama quickly turned into a real-life tragedy when it became clear something had gone wrong. A fragment from the device allegedly struck him, leading to his untimely death.
💔 Even more heartbreaking, the deceased was said to have played the role of Jesus in previous years and was actively involved in preparing others for the performance.
